On Tuesday, two Russian ballistic missiles hit a military institute and a hospital in Poltava, Ukraine, killing 51 and injuring 271, according to Ukrainian officials. The attack was the deadliest strike on Ukraine this year. On Wednesday, another Russian strike in Lviv killed seven civilians. Russia’s latest attacks follow a Ukrainian ground incursion into Russia. On August 6, Ukrainian troops entered Kursk, a Russian region north of Ukraine. Four weeks later, Ukraine still maintains a ground presence in Kursk as well as control of about 500 square miles and 100 settlements.

Last week, NPR reported that an official at the Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) had a confrontation with Trump campaign staff members who were filming and taking photos in a restricted area of the cemetery. That area, named Section 60, is reserved for soldiers killed while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Arlington has strict rules against photography and filming for political purposes in the cemetery, and NPR reported that ANC officials told Trump staffers that only ANC staff were permitted to take photos in Section 60.

The Harris-Walz interview. On Thursday, Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz spoke with CNN’s Dana Bash in their first interview since Harris replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee for president. The interview, which was broadcast Thursday night but recorded earlier that day, lasted approximately 27 minutes and touched on a range of issues, including border security, fracking and the war in Gaza, as well as how Harris’s positions on those issues have changed over time.

On Monday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg sent a letter to the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee claiming that the Biden administration had pressured the company to "censor" content related to Covid-19 in 2021. Zuckerberg also said that Meta should not have temporarily suppressed a 2020 New York Post story about the contents of Hunter Biden’s laptop while it waited for fact-checkers to verify the article’s details.

On Sunday morning, around 100 Israeli warplanes launched airstrikes targeting hundreds of rocket launchers across southern Lebanon; Israel said its attack preempted a planned offensive from Hezbollah. Shortly after, Hezbollah launched hundreds of rockets and drones it said were targeting military bases and missile defense positions in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights and across Northern Israel. Hezbollah claimed the attack successfully hit its targets, while the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said it was “mostly” thwarted, causing light damage to some homes while one Israeli sailor was killed by missile shrapnel. On Saturday, French authorities arrestedTelegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov as part of an investigation into illicit activity on the messaging app, including money laundering, drug trafficking, and child abuse. The arrest comes as governments across the globe grapple with how to best regulate social media and messaging platforms. Durov has not been formally charged but can be held for questioning until Wednesday under French law.

On Friday, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. suspended his presidential campaign and endorsed former President Donald Trump. Kennedy plans to remove his name from the ballot in ten battleground states but remain an option in safe Republican and Democrat states to give his supporters in noncompetitive states the option to vote for him without playing spoiler. Kennedy has already taken action to remove his name from the ballot in Arizona and Pennsylvania, but election officials in Michigan, Nevada, and Wisconsin said it is too late for him to take his name off the ballot.

On Sunday, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) released the party’s 2024 platform. In a press release, the DNC noted that the platform had been passed on July 16, prior to President Joe Biden’s exit from the presidential race, but that the document “makes a strong statement about the historic work that President Biden and Vice President Harris have accomplished hand-in-hand.” The platform, however, was not updated to reflect that Biden is no longer the nominee, frequently referring to the president’s plans for a second term.
